Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
