Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
