US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense official, the US military executed a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Prior Actions
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The government has faced growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader political aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
