The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be challenging to recreate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

He expressed his plan to channel his attention toward engaging the youth and countering what he labeled a dominant downbeat story currently found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Away from Coaching

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was prompted regarding rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Prior to the launch of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate stated that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for teenagers, drawing on insights from his time as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate maintains that his time leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Division

He insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes conflict.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, the book Dear England, is set to present further insights on guidance and national identity drawn from his notable career.
