Unfortunately, they begin against a formidable opponent versus the South African side. Fortunately, they kick off with a demanding fixture opposing the Proteas. Success today would give England instant momentum and justify the cautious confidence of their pre-tournament chatter.
Pre-Tournament Momentum
An excellent win versus the Aussies in their previous practice game has increased that confidence, even if the standout displays of Alice Capsey (88 not out) and Sarah Glenn (taking 5 wickets for 32 runs) presented Charlotte Edwards with a minor dilemma.
Edwards is known for her success, thus there is no risk of the team having modest ambitions. Yet, externally they occupy a rare spot where their tournament benchmark is quite obvious.
Tournament Expectations
Not making the last four would be a minor shocker, even allowing for the improvement among the traditional also-rans. Advancing to the ultimate game ahead of either Australia or India, the primary frontrunners to lift the trophy, would be a serious achievement. And if England win it… no, let’s not go there. It’s far too soon for those kinds of predictions.
